Description

Dyeing poison dart frogs (Dendrobates tinctorius), like many other amphibians, go through an amazing transformation from hatching to adulthood. These tadpoles are recommended to be individually reared in 16 oz. cups, due to their cannibalistic nature. The tadpole cup should be filled with at least 10 oz. of tadpole tea made from spring water and soaked Indian almond leaves. It can take anywhere from 3-6 weeks from the time you receive your tadpole until it is ready to emerge from the water. This will depend largely on what temperature you keep it (higher temps = smaller froglet, but FASTER morphing). You will know your tadpole is close when it has fully formed both its front and back legs and its adult coloration has started coming in.

  • - This listing is for one (1) Dendrobates tinctorius tadpole. When you order this, you will receive one (1) tadpole 3-4 weeks of age
  • - Great beginner frog due to larger size, bold personality, and ease of breeding. Great educational opportunity!
  • - Stars grey but will slowly gain color. Commonly called the Sky Blue Poison Dart Frog, Blue Poison Arrow Frog, or the Dyeing Poison Dart Frog (based on an early belief that natives used brightly colored frogs to dye fabric)
  • - Should be kept single until morphed. Can be kept in groups when young, but best kept in pairs as adults
  • - Housing different species/morphs of dart frogs together is strongly discouraged. For the health of your pets, please avoid mixing!

You should feed your tadpole & give it a water change twice a week. To perform these water changes, carefully dump out 1/4 of the water and remove any old uneaten food without dumping your tadpole. Soak half of an Indian almond leaf in a gallon jug of spring water and let it sit at room temperature. Slowly introduce water from the jug into the cup (pour a little bit into the cup every 10 minutes). Fill this until the 16 oz. cup is 3/4 full (about 12 oz). Then add a small piece of almond leaf for the tadpole to nibble on while in the cup until it starts disintegrating, at which point you'll want to replace it. Finally, place one tadpole pellet into the cup, secure the provided lid on it, and put the cup itself somewhere safe where it won't get too cold or knocked over. You will also want to make sure it is exposed to an ambient light cycle (basically, do not put your tadpole in complete darkness 24/7). If you have multiple tadpoles, set up multiple cups such that each gets its own cup.

When handling frogs, use powder-free nitrile gloves to protect their skin.
