Energy Draining and Expensive to Maintain

ASizz

We have had two of these pet doors and about to need a replacement because it is broken beyond repair. Aside from that this door is a cool concept, but the sensors are hard to keep up with as they screw off and get lost. Keeping up with batteries is super expensive. The door takes two D batteries and they last less than a month. We don't even use the system as it's designed. If your dog is one that goes hard through a door, this is not the door for you. One of our dog tears through when coming inside which has caused the plastic on the door and the insert to break. If the door does not lock them there are gaps in all sides. This is insanely draining on utility bills, especially in extreme heat or cold. I would not recommend this door to anyone really.

5 years and still going strong

Really surprised by the mixed reviews. I originally bought mine in 2021, and it has held up longer than the actual old exterior door it was installed into. The company was nice enough to send me a new cutting template so that I could transfer the pet door to my new exterior door. I originally bought it for my very large and strong Bouviers that would run into the door constantly. The hinges and hardware are all quite strong so I could only assume the reviews are for an older model of this product. I originally chose this product because I do not want the cats outside. It has done a great job at only allowing the dogs to enter or exit the house. There is very minimal draft in between the door and the flap. I do not notice any change in temp near the door so I am comfortable using it in my state of NC where we have very humid and hot summers. I also prefer the clean look and translucent flap which does allow some light in while still providing some privacy.

Biggest mistake

Originally I had the all weather petsafe door. When our cat learned how to use the doggie door, I replaced it with this electronic one. Big mistake. Within a week the cat learned to just follow the dog out. Once he was a little slow and the door ended up locking shut on his tail. That was a nightmare trying to get it to unlock with it shut on his tail. After only about 4 mo of use, the flap came off. Was a pain to put it back on. Now after only 10 mo the cheap hinge has broken completely. Now I'm finding out there is no replacement and I would have to buy a whole new door. Wish I could find a replacement door that would fit the bigger hole we had to make to fit this one. Only other option would be to buy a new door. Both options are expensive. Very mad that my only reason to buy this door was to keep our cat from going out and that plan backfired. This door is also very noisy. I also had to spray paint the clear flap black to block out all the light it lets in. It is also very drafty.

As said before "be prepared to buy again". Seems like every two years the hinge breaks and you can just buy the hinge.

Does not work as intended...

The door does not work as well as we had hoped it would. We did adjust the sensitivity according to the directions, but either the door just constantly locks and unlocks when she is not trying to go out, or she could be standing right next to it and it will stay locked. It is not reliable and it makes me worry about my dog getting locked outside when I am not home.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Mine rusted out and broke within a few months.

We had trouble with the battery key and got new ones, but it never seemed to work as easily as it should have. When we went to replace the batteries in the door, they had seeped come take your meds and rusted out the springs.

Nice door except for the cheap hinge. They break way too easy and then the door flap starts smacking the frame.

Not that great

This is great if you either want to permanently lock it or use the pet keys. Trying to unlock it after you lock it is almost impossible, as soon as I can afford a new one it will happen.

Questions

1 - 10 of 62 Questions

This is the second door I have purchased and the top hinge always breaks I would like a replacement this time!

  1. We are sorry to hear this has happened with your pets door! Our team would love to help! If you would like you can reach out to our team via phone Monday - Friday 8am - 7pm EST at 1-866-738-4379 or via chat through our Smart Assistant Monday - Friday 9am - 9pm EST and Saturday 9am - 6pm EST here - https://support.petsafe.net/contact-us/

Can you put this on a sliding door, I have a soggy door insert for a sliding door, can it be put over/in place of the existing doggy door in the sliding door?

  1. Thank you so much for asking. This door was designed to be installed in a standard door or wall with the optional wall extension kit. Regrettably, we would not have any suggestions or recommendations for a dyi situation such as this.

Can you buy replacement parts vs an entire door? Like many people on here, the bar with the plastic tabs has broken off after about 6 months. The door itself is fine. Is there a way to just buy those parts or is buying a new door the only option?

  1. To help determine the replacement parts available for your pet's door, please reach out to our Customer Care team directly at 1-866-738-4379.

what is measurements of the entire door

  1. Thank you for asking about this! So that we can best provide information for you, please reach out to our Customer Care team and let us know which size you are interested in.

I purchased the large electronic pet door. The maximum wall thickness for the door is 2", however I have to install it in a 3" thick wall. Do you have an extension to make up the 1" difference between the interior and exterior sections of the door?

  1. Thank you for this question! The Electronic SmartDoor™ Wall Conversion Kit allows for the installation of the Large SmartDoor into walls up to 7 1/4 inches thick. It is important to mention with a wall 3" thick, the pet door may not be flush with the wall.

How do I measure my dog to decide whether I need a large or small door?

  1. Thank you for your question! We recommend measuring your dog's body width and height, then comparing these measurements to the flap openings of each door. When measuring height, you would want to start from the deepest part of your dog's chest and measure to the top of your dog's back. The flap openings for the doors are as follows: Small: 5 ½” x 7 7/8”, Large: 11” x 16”

Can I replace a sliding glass door installation (11x18) with this door?

  1. No it goes into a regular wood door

What are the dimensions of the large and small smart doors

  1. Thank you for your great question. The flap opening of the small SmartDoor is 5½" x 7⅞". The flap opening of the large door is 11" x 16". The small door's frame measures 9" x 15⅝" while the large frame is 16⅛" x 23⅝"

will this door work in a storm door?

  1. Great question! This Electronic SmartDoor can be installed in most standard doors measuring 1½" to 2" thick. We do recommend to avoid installing this product in a metal door as the metal can interfere with the radio signal from door and SmartKey. For further product information, feel free to contact our experts at 1-800-732-2677.

I am interested in this for my two Boxers; but want to keep the cats in. How long does the dog stay open when the dogs use it? The cats are very fast and will learn to sneak out if given the chance.

  1. Thank you for your great question. This door will remain unlocked so long as the SmartKey is within range of the door. For example, if your dog takes a nap right next to the door, the door will remain unlocked the whole time they are napping within range of the door.
