Unfortunately, there is no one "best" food for any dog regardless of breed. The "best" food while satisfy three criteria: 1) it is easy to buy 2) your dog will eat it 3) it does not give your dog diarrhea or has any other negative health effects. If there was one perfect food, it wouldn't matter if Kalei wouldn't eat it. Choose a BB formula and stick with it. Monitor her weight and body condition and adjust the amount, up or down, if she losing or gaining too much weight. Read the labels choose diets with quality ingredients and named protein sources while avoiding meat meals or by products. The website www.dogfoodadvisor.com is an excellent resource for comparing diets.

You are correct that it is very hard to find a low protein dog food. Most commercial dog foods are formulated to meet the needs of an average adult dog, so they tend to have a higher amount of protein. You can find some senior diets that have lower protein amounts, but a really low protein diet is generally only available in a prescription diet. Blue Buffalo has had some recalls, but generally tries to do a good job formulating a good food. My top senior diet recommendations are Wellness and Orijen, but Orijen is not low protein. Depending on how much protein Dot is currently eating, Wellness Senior may be a good option even though if has more protein than Blue Buffalo senior. https://www.wellnesspetfood.com/natural-dog-food/product-catalog/complete-health-senior-senior Good luck! I wish I had a simple answer for you, but I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Dogs and cats with diabetes should eat food with as little carbohydrates as possible. The easiest is to feed a commercial diet food for diabetic dogs, such as from Hill's or Royal Canin. I am not fon dof Blue Buffalo as I see a lot of dogs who have health problems while on Blue Buffalo brand.

I do not recommend Blue Buffalo diets at all. I think they are too rich, especially for a young puppy. Also Blue Buffalo does not follow AAFCO standards (nutritional guidelines). So, I don't think their food is properly balanced. All they do well is marketing. Just because it is expensive doesn't make it better. If I were you I would find another food that uses AAFCO guidelines. It will tell you on the bag where the nutritional information is. If you could call the shelter where you got her and ask what they were feeding that would be helpful. The other thing I would do is feed a probiotic as that will help repopulate the GI tract with good bacteria. Hope this helps! Best wishes!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I definitely understand your concern. I do think it would be best to switch them to a regular diet. There are many types out there that are affordable and good. I like the Purina Pro Plan shredded blends in that category because they are palatable, affordable and of very good quality. Good luck and have a great day!
