Egg-binding occurs when a female cannot pass the mature eggs formed in her reproductive system. Many factors cause this condition, but it can usually be prevented with good nutrition and husbandry.

You can add in a commercial pelleted mix. Brands include Roudybush, Harrison's, LaFeber or Pretty Bird. This should make up most of her diet. You can supplement with a small amount of a fortified seed mix. Round out her diet with fresh greens, vegetables and a small amount of fruit. She can also eat foods such as cooked grains and beans and plain pasta. Scrambled egg is also a healthy treat. Introduce new foods gradually and one at a time. Monitor for loose droppings afterwards.

Choose a commercial pelleted diet labeled as "all flock" or "flock raiser". This is a complete diet for most chickens. For the hen, you will need to supplement calcium, especially if she is a layer. You can offer her crushed oyster shells freely. Do not use a layer diet for both. The calcium levels would be too high for the rooster leading to potential health issues for him. The website www.backyardchickens.com is an excellent resource for information regarding the husbandry and feeding of domestic chickens.

As long as Peaches is already on a regularly balanced diet, you shouldn't need to give that many calcium supplements. One thing on its own in addition to her regular food should be more than enough. You can also scramble some eggs at home and mix it with a little flour into a paste and offer small amounts to Peaches if you wish to avoid feeding commercial brands that contain sugar or extra ingredients.

Thank you for using Boop by Petco! Cuttle bones are great for keeping the beak naturally trimmed, as well as providing a source of calcium and an appropriate balance of other minerals. Budgies can consume boiled egg whites however, I have found that they typically do not go for new foods especially those that aren’t colorful. If you do decide to provide egg whites for your bird, I recommend replacing them every day to prevent them from spoiling.

Thanks for reaching out about Ringo Starr. Laying imperfect eggs and sitting quietly could be a sign of egg binding or other reproductive diseases. If she is eating well and otherwise not looking in distress, then monitoring her is okay for a few days. Ensure her diet is adequate, to replace calcium that is being lost due to egg laying. If she continues to isolate herself or her signs of illness progress, an avian veterinarian examination should be scheduled. Good luck.
