What's the best healthy food to feed my backyard hens and roosters?
Choose a commercial pelleted diet labeled as "all flock" or "flock raiser". This is a complete diet for most chickens. For the hen, you will need to supplement calcium, especially if she is a layer. You can offer her crushed oyster shells freely. Do not use a layer diet for both. The calcium levels would be too high for the rooster leading to potential health issues for him. Is Purina Layer Pellets good for chickens? What other feeds exist?
Hello. Some feed co-ops will have their own brands that they mill themselves, & there are regional graineries as well. Nutrena is a well known national brand, as is Dumor. Personally, I use Purina & Nutrena, altho in a pinch, I will pick up the brand made by a nearby grain mill. So yes, Purina is an excellent brand. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

My hen keeps getting eggbound. Is this a chronic issue I should worry about?
I would be concerned if it keeps happening. This could be due to an issue such as the wrong nutrition -- a good layer feed along with an additional calcium supplement should be enough nutritionally to prevent this -- or an issue with the reproductive tract itself. Older hens can develop tumors and other reproductive issues that may cause chronic egg-binding, and other underlying health issues or illnesses may as well. Younger hens may not lay consistently-sized eggs yet which could cause problems or irregular laying, which may improve over time as they get used to laying. If the problem is persisting, having a vet evaluate her is a good idea.
