What supplements help a boarded horse gain weight without extra meals?
Hi again. Your main source of calories should come from good forage but if that is unavailable, you will need to add more fat to the diet. You can do this with vegetable oils, especially doybrsn oil rather than corn oil. Start with 2 ounces of oil twice daily & gradually build up to 8 ounces twice daily. Another source of fat is stabilized rice bran, which is about 20% fat & is palatable to horses. This is also less messy than an oil. You would feed the same increasing amount as the oil. Watch the manure for any signs of diarrhea or loose stool & back off the fats as necessary. Hope this helps & thanks againfor using Boop by Petco.

Is it safe to mix my horse's Marqui EPM medication into their food?
If you are sure the horse will eat all of the feed with the paste, you can add it. However it would be better to directly give the paste into the mouth as it is a very expensive medication and your horse needs the full dose appropriate for its weight. Giving the paste directly into the mouth, then holding the mouth shut for a few seconds will ensure the paste is swallowed. If you are not sure how it is done, ask some of the barn mates to help you dose your horse.

Is Lubrigen a good equine joint supplement? Is it safe and tested?
Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco! I think Lubrigen is a good supplement as a preventive to help with joint health. If the horse already has joint problems this product probably isn’t going to help that much; however, it won’t hurt to use it. As far as testing goes, the supplements are not regulated by any organization like the FDA so I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s tested. Most companies do their own anecdotal testing but I don’t think I would abide by that. If you’re looking for an actual FDA approved product that has had evidence based testing done, you should ask your vet about using Lengend and/or Adequan. Really, it all depends on what you are trying to achieve. I suggest you talk to your veterinarian directly as they have your horses history and can probably help you make the best choice. Senior horse losing weight? What supplements can help him gain?
Make sure your vet has done full bloodwork and an exam to look for any obvious age-related health issues like bad teeth, infection, or internal tumors. Senior feed is great, but some horses need more like 12-15 lbs of it per day to maintain decent weight. It can get really expensive, unfortunately. If you increase the feed, do so very slowly to avoid colic or impaction. Beet pulp and high-fat supplements can also help. I use Purina Amplify. Hope that helps!
