Thank you for using Boop by Petco! Depending on the type of bird you are planning to get, a more social environment may be best. I would also recommend considering proximity to the kitchen in your home as well as lighting in the room. It’s best to keep the bird in a room further from the kitchen to avoid potentially toxic fumes and in a room that does not get too hot or cold during the day. It is always best to acclimate birds slowly to their new environment. I hope all is well with your new pet!

Flake should probably be seen by a veterinarian. The closest board-certified avian veterinarian is: Dr. Scott Stahl of Stahl Exotic Animal Veterinary Services in Fairfax, Virginia, approximately 4 hours from where you are. However, many veterinarians who are not boarded specialists will still see birds. You should check with the veterinary practices in your area to determine if they will do so.

Thanks for reaching out. Rarely are wild parakeets nice and handleable. If sleeping a lot, might be sick or malnourished. Try offering food, supply heat support. If still lethargic by tomorrow, seek veterinary help at clinic. Good luck.

It's possible Blue wasn't socialized very well or didn't have access to toys, so these are new and scary to him. However, with any behavioral issue, ruling out any potential health issues with your local avian vet first is good to make sure there isn't something underlying behind it. If he checks out healthy, it may be that he just needs more time to get used to being a "normal" bird. If he has a favorite snack he likes, offering it every time you come by, or hiding it in his toys to encourage exploration and play may help. This can take time even with tame birds, so being extra patient with Blue is best. Many birds also like different types of toys, so trying out a variety of things such as mirrors, ladders, swings, toys that can be chewed, ones with bells, feathers, etc may encourage him to find one he likes to play with.

Poor Greenie, though bonded birds do often show signs of grief after losing a mate, not all do. While you are not seeing signs of grief in Greenie, it can be extremely difficult to determine whether a bird might be interested in another cage mate. In the wild, birds often do pair up and many of them live in large flocks so it makes sense that many house birds would want a friend, however, in the wild birds (even bonded mating pairs) do not live in such close quarters as they do in cages in our homes. Because of this, I always tell my bird owners that if they are considering adding another bird to their family, prepare for what you might do if the two do not end up getting along (you may need space for two cages, as well as twice the number of cages, bowls, toys, etc.). Even if two birds will ultimately get along I recommend owners introduce their birds on neutral territory (do not stick the new bird immediately into your other bird's cage). Spend a few days with the two birds getting
