It may be that he has some inflammation and mild infection in his skin. Ideally, take him to your vet for an exam, especially if he seems itchy or uncomfortable. There is a great shampoo available by Duoxo that may be helpful. Typically these products are sold through veterinarians; however you can also find it on amazon. https://www.douxo.com/us/douxo-solutions/douxo-chlorhexidine. If it doesn't seem to be getting better, take him in. He may have some allergies and or another condition that needs more specific treatment. Thanks for asking Boop by Petco!

Head and Shoulder is OK but not the best product for this issue. Dandruff is called seborrhea and I would use a dog shampoo made specifically for this issue like this one. It also comes as a mousse that you can apply instead of bathing with a shampoo. http://www.allivet.com/p-6684-douxo-seborrhea-shampoo-for-dogs-and-cats.aspx http://www.allivet.com/p-6678-douxo-seborrhea-mousse-for-dogs-and-cats-68-oz.aspx I, personally would get the mousse since his seborrhea is just in one location. I would use it every 3-4 days until improvement noticed. If no improvement within a few weeks I would get Pokey to your vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

It looks like a "hot spot". I suggest you use this product on it 2-3 times per day. If after 5-7 days there is no improvement then he should see a vet. ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vetericyn-Wound-Skincare-Liquid-Spray/dp/B06WP7LGPT/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=dog+hotspot&qid=1568669830&sr=8-7 )

Actually the active ingredient found in head and shoulders is "Zinc Pyrithione" and the safety of this was studied and published in a journal article titled Skin Pharmacol Appl Skin Physiol. 2002 Nov-Dec;15(6):434-41. It studied the safety of Zinc Phyrithione and Ketoconazole and also how efficient they were at treating canine seborrhea (dry skin). They both were deemed safe for use, avoiding any product going into the eyes, and Ketoconazole was found to be far superior for treatment of canine seborrhea than Zinc Pyrithione. So to answer your question, yes Head and Shoulders, with the active ingredient Zinc Pyrithione, is safe for use in bathing pets as long as none gets in the eyes or is ingested (zinc in large quantities can be toxic to all pets). But there are more effective options out there such as Ketoconazole based shampoo's.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This sounds like dermatitis. This could be due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blo
