Hello, and thanks for your question. These are very similar medications, but prednisolone is best for cats, as they are better at digesting that than prednisone. Prednisone isn't harmful, but prednisolone is better in cats. Hope this helps!

Yes, legally the vet is allowed to do this. Prescription medications require an exam, even if the cat has been on the medication long term. Typically long term medications require a yearly exam, but a vet may request exams more often depending in the medication. You absolutely cannot get steroids anywhere but a vet, and if Roxy needs a refill, you need to find a way to afford the exam and the meds. There is no other option. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Yes, this could be due to the suspected food allergy. You could consider having your veterinarian prescribe prednisolone to help decrease the itch while you get his food. That can help quite a bit. Good luck!

5 mg is within the dose range for prednisone use in cats. It is typically given on a tapering (decreasing) dose. You may see increased thirst and urination, increased appetite or even panting. These side effects will resolve once the medication is finished.

There is an injection called depo medrol, i personally do not recommend it as potential side effects can be very serious. the better option in my opinion are tablets, prednisolone tablets for cats are very small and easily hidden in gravy or wet food. most cats eat the wet food and never even suspect there is a tablet inside. it's not a big deal if you are 1-2 hours late.
