My 3 pound dog was prescribed 25 mg trazodone for anxiety yesterday. Vet is closed and I'm fearful the dose will be too high. What do you think?
It has a very high variable dose range and each pet responds differently to it. You can always give 1/2 if you are nervous for the first dose to see how Lilly responds. If you see no change then you know you have to give the entire dose.

Hi there. Trazodone has a wide dosage range, so it's certainly possible that you may have room to safely increase Cupid's dose - however, you should never make any changes to the dosage of a prescription medication without talking to the veterinarian who prescribed it. So I would suggest calling Cupid's regular veterinarian to talk about your concerns. He/she may recommend increasing the trazodone dose, or may suggest switching to a different medication altogether such as gabapentin or Sileo. A training plan to help Cupid learn to stand calmly for grooming would also be helpful, since there's only so much that we can accomplish with medication alone. If you're not sure how to do this, I would recommend getting in touch with a good reward-based trainer in your area who can help you get started. You can search for one nearby here: www.ccpdt.org

Hi there. Yes, you should be able to get it compounded into a flavored liquid (like chicken or fish) if this would be easier for you to give. You may have a local compounding pharmacy that can do this, or you can use an online pharmacy like Wedgewood or Vets First Choice. I would recommend calling your veterinarian tomorrow to talk about this - he/she should be able to tell you where you can have this done, and can write a new prescription for the compounded medication.

There is no problem with combining isoxazoline medication like Credelio with trazodone. It should be fine to give the trazodone as prescribed. Potential side effects of both medication include diarrhea and a decrease in appetite, but if you have given both medications before without a problem you’re unlikely to see this problem now.

It is possible Petey has built up a tolerance to Trazodone. This can happen if used long term. Discuss an increase with your veterinarian. Consider also desensitization therapy and a pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser, to further help decrease anxiety.
