Thanks for reaching out. If is a good idea to fast for 1-2 days prior to shipment, this decreased feces and will help to keep the ammonia down. Typically clear bags are utilized with about 50% water, and 50% air/oxygen used. A local pet store might be able to assist, as they get shipment in (so have older bags and boxes, which need to be disinfected) and hopefully the skills to ship. Check with the airline also, box needs to be well labelled "LIE ANIMALS" and "THIS END UP". Sometimes a health certificate for interstate travel is needed, so contact airline and State of Utah, veterinarian. Good luck.

If your are using a product such as Instant Ocean ( www.instantocean.com ) or Reef Crystals ( http://www.instantocean.com/Products/Sea-Salt-Mixes/reef-crystals-sea-salt.aspx ), then directions will be on the container. Other products may also include instructions. The amount of sea salt will depend on the specific gravity you desire. Ocean water, or water used in marine tanks, has a specific gravity of 1.025, so you will need to dissolve enough salt into a quantity of water to reach that level. You will need to allow for 24 hours to make sure the salt has completely dissolved. A fish tank will need a filter, a light/hood and a heater. Make sure the filter is rated for at least twice the tank volume. The heater should be adjustable since water temperature will depend on the species of fish. Good "starter" fish include Tetras, Mollies, Danios or Tetras. A new tank should be set up and left running empty for several weeks before adding fish. A pinch of flake food can be sprinkled in daily. This "cycling" will allow a population of beneficial bacteria to colonize the tank and filter. These bacteria will break down wastes (ammonia, nitrites and nitrates) which are toxic to fish.

It could be Columnaris, aka cottonmouth. It looks like a fungal infection but is actually an infection caused by a gram negative bacteria. You can treat with kanamycin and nitrofuran. Both are antibiotics effective against this bacteria. Brand names are Kanaplex (by SeaChem) and Furan 2 (by API). You can find them online or in the aquarium section of the local Petco. Follow label directions carefully and remove the carbon filter insert during treatment if necessary. You will likely need to treat the entire tank since more than one fish is symptomatic.

Thanks for reaching out about Freddie. A curvature of the spine can displace the swim bladder making swimming difficult. Vitamin C deficiencies (scurvy) can cause spinal deformities and is usually the result of old food. Fish food should be purchased new every 2-3 months as vitamin C degrades quickly. A veterinary visit is recommended for radiographs to determine the status of the swim bladder and determine if antibiotics are needed. Radiographs might also determine if anti-inflammatories for spondylosis can help. Good luck.
