Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I'm sorry to hear your new cat has been having litterbox issues. To start, I would recommend offering at least one other box of a different kind (covered vs not, for example). I would also add cat attract litter to the boxes, and consider putting a pheromone collar on her. If these suggestions are insufficient to help with her issue, I would recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian to assure that there is no underlying medical issue contributing to her urination problems and then moving on with a plan from there. What do I need to buy for my new 1-month-old kitten at Petco?
Congratulations!! I would recommend making sure you get kitten appropriate toys, two litter boxes and kitten food. At 1 month of age I would recommend a wet kitten food. I would also recommend clumping litter for her. You can always get her other fun stuff like a soft bed for her. I would hold off on any treats until she gets used to her new home. What safe air fresheners can I use near my cat's litter box?
The only air "fresheners" we worry about with cats are essential oils. I've included more information about that below. http://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/blog/essential-oils-cats/ Any other air fresheners are fine unless your cat has asthma or is sensitive to certain scents. Don't forget that cats' sense of smell is much better than ours, so an air freshener that is too strong can actually deter a cat from wanting to go in the room with it. The most important thing in keeping the room smelling good is scooping the litter box at least once daily and cleaning the entire thing (changing the litter completely) at least once weekly. I also noticed that you have Creamcicle listed at unneutered. Getting him neutered will also decrease the odor of his urine which might be helpful. Good luck! Why is my new cat hiding and peeing on the couch? What can I do?
For the hiding, I recommend you put some Feliway diffusers in your house and do some environmental enrichment for her. Usually these two things help. Use this product on the urine spots to remove the smell: ( https://www.allivet.com/p-8846-urine-away-stain-odor-remover.aspx ) 2. Check your litter box. Cats that urinate in inappropriate locations sometimes have an aversion to the box. Can be the type of litter, the depth of the litter, the location of the box (ie: noisy area) or even the size of the box. You may to change things up a bit. 3. Sometimes inappropriate urination is due to a bladder infection. You should have her checked for that by your vet if the urinating on the couch continues despite making any changes recommended above. New cat won't use unscented litter box, pees in shower. What to do?
I love that you have already switched to the unscented litter as that can be a big problem for many cats. Putting the litter box in the shower is a great idea. I would also make sure to clean up the spots he went outside the litterbox using an enzymatic pet stain cleaner to ensure he does not keep smelling urine/feces there and think that it is akin to a litterbox. Other things, like cleaning the litter box often, having multiple litterboxes which are different types of boxes, and trying different types of litter (such as fine-grain litter) may also help you figure out what type of litter Mittens likes. While it certainly sounds like Mittens is having trouble getting used to his new litterbox, it is important to remember that internal diseases (like organ, hormonal, or orthopedic diseases, among other possible causes) can cause Mittens to have a hard time making it into the litterbox so it is important to take Mittens to your vet for evaluation to make sure we are not missing something
